Stay healthy and active along with me. I'll be talking about things that have changed in my life or affected a friend once we passed the glorious age of 50. I believe to enjoy life and feel young, we need to stay busy while having fun.

Bored? Out of Work? Volunteer!
Volunteering in your community is a great way to make contacts if you're looking for work or wanting the companionship of like-minded people if you are bored or lonesome. There are several places with limited funding who depend on volunteers to continue their service. You don't need to just settle for anything. Look for the one that is right for you.
1) Do you love movies and the theatre? Do you have good people skills? Consider volunteering at your local theatre. You will have a lot of fun and may get to see live theatre for free or a minimal fee. While in St. Petersburg, Florida, I had a great time volunteering as an usher at St. Petersburg Little Theatre. I met very interesting people and saw some wonderful productions.
2) Out of work and getting discouraged? Sign up with AARP's "Create the Good" to find opportunities in your area. They will email you with openings located your zip code so you can find the right match for you. You may end up with a job or a Letter of Reference that will help you land a job. You will find contacts that will be happy to spread the word and offer suggestions. At the very least, you will feel better about yourself while helping others.
3) Love working with people? Call nearby hospitals and ask for "Volunteer Services". They have need of volunteers in many areas. You may interact with patients and their families or stay in the background and assist with clerical duties. If you have considered a new career, a hospital is a great place to learn about the various vocations within the medical field.
4) Do you love to read? Are you a patron of your local library? Why not volunteer? The many that I have been in are usually low on staff and funding. They greatly appreciate their volunteers and realize it is because of them that they are able to keep the doors open longer hours and/or not have to shut down a branch.
5) Is nurturing in your nature? Do you continously find yourself giving a helping hand to others no matter what your own situation may be? If you are interested in helping children, considering looking for a residential home for foster children or if you would prefer lending a hand to older adults, check with the nursing homes in your area.
Volunteers need to be dependable and usually have a set schedule. Whether you volunteer a few hours a month or a few days a week, however, you can choose the hours and days you work. I guarantee you will have some rewarding experiences.
